The Australian marine research, industry, and stakeholder community has recently undertaken an extensive collaborative process to identify the highest national priorities for wind-waves research. This was undertaken under the auspices of the Forum for Operational Oceanography Surface Waves Working Group. The main steps in the process were first, soliciting possible research questions from the community via an online survey; second, reviewing the questions at a face-to-face workshop; and third, online ranking of the research questions by individuals. This process resulted in 15 identified priorities, covering research activities and the development of infrastructure. The top five priorities are 1) enhanced and updated nearshore and coastal bathymetry; 2)...

180 years of Botanical Investigations in Antarctica and the Role of Brazil Acta Botanica
Câmara,Paulo E.A.S.; Carvalho-Silva,Micheline.
ABSTRACT Botany is one of the oldest sciences done above the 60oS parallel with more than 180 years passing since the first professional botanist collected plants in Antarctica. Far from being a barren place, plants constitute an important part of polar ecosystems. Brazil is one of only 29 countries in the world with consultative status and to currently develop botanical studies in Antarctica. We discuss the importance of polar science to Brazil and the role that Brazil has in the international austral-polar scientific community, as well as the importance of its newly inaugurated scientific station.

Abstract Given the scarcity of studies with elderly and the existence of studies investigating the effect of vitamin D supplementation in PEH (post exercise hypotension), this study evaluated the effect of a single megadose of vitamin D on resting blood pressure (RBP) and post-exercise hypotension (PEH) in the elderly. 11 hypertensive elderly women (70.3 ± 1.7 years) received a single megadose of 200.000 IU of cholecalciferol or a placebo, orally, through capsules. On day 7, the subjects performed 30 minutes of aerobic exercise with blood pressure measurement before exercise and every 10 minutes after exercise during 60 minutes, besides cardiac autonomic modulation. RBP did not significantly change. Exercise promoted significant systolic PEH only in one...

Productivity of tropical lowland moist forests is often limited by availability and functional allocation of phosphorus (P) that drives competition among tree species and becomes a key factor in determining forestall community diversity. We used non-target 31P-NMR metabolic profiling to study the foliar P-metabolism of trees of a French Guiana rainforest. The objective was to test the hypotheses that P-use is species-specific, and that species diversity relates to species P-use and concentrations of P-containing compounds, including inorganic phosphates, orthophosphate monoesters and diesters, phosphonates and organic polyphosphates. We found that tree species explained the 59% of variance in 31P-NMR metabolite profiling of leaves. A principal component...

3-Acetoxy-fatty acid isoprenyl esters from androconia of the ithomiine butterfly Ithomia salapia ArchiMer
Mann, Florian; Szczerbowski, Daiane; De Silva, Lisa; Mcclure, Melanie; Elias, Marianne; Schulz, Stefan.
Male ithomiine butterflies (Nymphalidae: Danainae) have hairpencils on the forewings (i.e. androconia) that disseminate semiochemicals during courtship. While most ithomiines are known to contain derivatives of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, dihydropyrrolizines or g-lactones in these androconia, here we report on a new class of fatty acid esters identified in two subspecies, Ithomia salapia aquinia and I. s. derasa. The major components were identified as isoprenyl (3-methyl-3-butenyl) (Z)-3-acetyloxy-11-octadecenoate, isoprenyl (Z)-3-acetyloxy-13-octadecenoate (12) and isoprenyl 3-acetyloxyoctadecanoate (11) by GC/MS- and GC/IR-analyses, microderivatizations, and synthesis of representative compounds. The absolute configuration of 12 was determined to be R. The...

3D soil void space lacunarity as an index of degradation after land use change Agronomy
Santos, Carlos Renato dos; Antonino, Antônio Celso Dantas; Heck, Richard John; Lucena, Leandro Ricardo Rodrigues de; Oliveira, Alex Cristóvão Holanda de; Silva, Antonio Samuel Alves da; Stosic, Borko; Menezes, Romulo Simões Cezar.
In this work, lacunarity analysis is performed on soil pores segmented by the pure voxel extraction method from soil tomography images. The conversion of forest to sugarcane plantation was found to result in higher sugarcane soil pore lacunarity than that of native forest soil, while the porosity was found to be lower. More precisely, this study shows that native forest has more porous soil with a more uniform spatial distribution of pores, while sugarcane soil has lower porosity and a more heterogeneous pore distribution. Moreover, validation through multivariate statistics demonstrates that lacunarity can be considered a relevant index of clustering and can explain the variability among soils under different land use systems. While porosity by itself...

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) generated by the exogenous administration of 5-aminolevulinic acid or δ-ALA and activated with an argon laser over a planktonic and biofilm of Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) as a pharmacological therapy alternative. A planktonic strain of E. faecalis was cultured with a solution of ∂-ALA (40 µg/mL)-thioglycolate solution for 13 min, and a biofilm of E. faecalis was cultured in a δ-ALA (80 µg/mL)-thioglycolate solution for 13 min. Then, both were irradiated with an argon laser. Finally, the antibacterial effect was evaluated by counting the CFU in planktonic form, and a LIVE/DEAD viability cell test. The production and accumulation of PpIX from exogenously...

-866G/A and Ins/Del polymorphisms in the UCP2 gene and diabetic kidney disease: case-control study and meta-analysis Genet. Mol. Biol.
Dieter,Cristine; Assmann,Taís Silveira; Lemos,Natália Emerim; Massignam,Eloísa Toscan; Souza,Bianca Marmontel de; Bauer,Andrea Carla; Crispim,Daisy.
Abstract Uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) decreases reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS overproduction is a key contributor to the pathogenesis of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). Thus, UCP2 polymorphisms are candidate risk factors for DKD; however, their associations with this complication are still inconclusive. Here, we describe a case-control study and a meta-analysis conducted to investigate the association between UCP2 -866G/A and Ins/Del polymorphisms and DKD. The case-control study comprised 385 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM): 223 patients without DKD and 162 with DKD. UCP2 -866G/A (rs659366) and Ins/Del polymorphisms were genotyped by real-time PCR and conventional PCR, respectively. For the meta-analysis, a literature search was conducted...

8-Propyl-6H-[1,3]dioxolo[4,5-g]chromen-6-one: A new coumarin with monoamine oxidase B inhibitory activity and possible anti-parkinsonian effects BJPS
Olaya,María del Pilar; Vergel,Nadezdha Esperanza; López,Jose Luis; Viña,Dolores; Guerrero,Mario Francisco.
Parkinson’s disease is a common neurodegenerative disorder. In this study, the monoamine oxidase inhibitory activity and potential anti-parkinsonian effects of 8-propyl-6H-[1,3]dioxolo[4,5-g]chromen-6-one (FCS303), a new synthetic coumarin, were evaluated. To do this, we used the reserpine model of Parkinson’s disease, an assay of levodopa/carbidopa potentiation, the catalepsy model of haloperidol, and an in vitro assay against monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity. Additionally, lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyl group quantification was performed in mice brain homogenates previously treated with haloperidol. FCS303 inhibited monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) with an IC50 of 5.46 ± 0.36 µM; however, there was no effect on monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A). The oral...

The ocean plays a crucial role in the functioning of the Earth System and in the provision of vital goods and services. The United Nations (UN) declared 2021–2030 as the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The Roadmap for the Ocean Decade aims to achieve six critical societal outcomes (SOs) by 2030, through the pursuit of four objectives (Os). It specifically recognizes the scarcity of biological data for deep-sea biomes, and challenges the global scientific community to conduct research to advance understanding of deep-sea ecosystems to inform sustainable management. In this paper, we map four key scientific questions identified by the academic community to the Ocean Decade SOs: (i) What is the diversity of life in the deep ocean? (ii)...

A box-model of carrying capacity of the Thau lagoon in the context of ecological status regulations and sustainable shellfish cultures ArchiMer
Pete, Romain; Guyondet, Thomas; Bec, Beatrice; Derolez, Valerie; Cesmat, Ludovic; Lagarde, Franck; Pouvreau, Stephane; Fiandrino, Annie; Richard, Marion.
The decrease of microbial and nutrient inputs from the watershed has long dominated lagoon ecosystem management objectives. Phytoplankton biomass and abundance have drastically decreased for more than a decade and Zostera meadow have gradually recovered, expressing lagoon ecosystem restoration such as Thau lagoon. Do the progressive achievement of the good ecological status of the Thau lagoon possibly threatens the shellfish industry in terms of production and oyster quality, by reducing the carrying capacity? To provide answers about the right balance to be achieved between conservation and exploitation, a new numerical tool was developed to help in decision-making. We hereby propose to incorporate a Dynamic Energy Budget type shellfish production model...

A cadeia agroindustrial do leite na Amazônia. Infoteca-e

A call for refining the role of humic-like substances in the oceanic iron cycle ArchiMer
Whitby, Hannah; Planquette, Helene; Cassar, Nicolas; Bucciarelli, Eva; Osburn, Christopher L.; Janssen, David J.; Cullen, Jay T.; González, Aridane G.; Völker, Christoph; Sarthou, Geraldine.
Primary production by phytoplankton represents a major pathway whereby atmospheric CO2 is sequestered in the ocean, but this requires iron, which is in scarce supply. As over 99% of iron is complexed to organic ligands, which increase iron solubility and microbial availability, understanding the processes governing ligand dynamics is of fundamental importance. Ligands within humic-like substances have long been considered important for iron complexation, but their role has never been explained in an oceanographically consistent manner. Here we show iron co-varying with electroactive humic substances at multiple open ocean sites, with the ratio of iron to humics increasing with depth. Our results agree with humic ligands composing a large fraction of the...
